Users of Starlink in South Africa are in for a significant setback as the satellite internet service provider has announced that it will be discontinuing service by the end of the month.
Starlink informed numerous South African users via email that their internet access will be terminated on April 30th, citing noncompliance with its terms and conditions.
The email emphasized that using Starlink kits outside of designated areas, as indicated on the Starlink Availability Map, is against their terms. Consequently, users will only be able to access their Starlink account for updates after the termination.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, Starlink, runs a fleet of low-Earth orbit satellites that provide high-speed internet access all over the world. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has not granted Starlink a license to operate in South Africa, despite the company’s potential to revolutionize connectivity.
To be eligible for a license, an applicant must meet Icasa’s requirements, which state that they must own 30% of their business from historically underrepresented groups. To use Starlink services, many South Africans had to resort to inventive means, such as buying roaming packages from nations where Starlink has licenses.
But Icasa made it clear last November in a government gazette that using Starlink in this way is prohibited. Additionally, Starlink itself stated in the recent email to users that the ‘Mobile – Regional’ plans are meant for temporary travel and transit, not permanent use in a location. Continuous use of these plans outside the country where service was ordered will result in service restrictions.
Starlink suggested getting in touch with local authorities if anyone was interested in offering its services in their area.
